Federal Way Kings swim at the Emerald City Open Water Swim 2005

Saturday, August 20th proved to be another great day to go jump in the lake.  Lake Washington that is, for the 21st annual Emerald City Open.  The morning was cool and overcast, and the turnout was great.

We had over ten swimmers from Federal Way Masters participate, and three second generation swimmers, Dan Smith’s son and daughter and Hugh and Jane Moore’s daughter.  Dan Smith’s son Aaron, won the overall half-mile, and most swimmers went home with a coffee mug, which was awarded to the top three in each age group.  And we were all proud to wear the strange penguin T-Shirts that made up this years logo.

Everyone I talked to seemed to improve over last year’s time.  Either the course was shorter, or smoother, or most likely a testament to our great coaching.

My highlight was being one of the first ones out to warm up, and I came across a turtle about a foot long swimming along the top of the lake.  He got away into the underwater “forest” so I had to settle for a coffee mug as my days catch.
