Federal Way Kings take on Fat Salmon 2004 Fourteen swimmers from the morning, brunch and evening practices came to Lake Washington on July 17, 2004 to compete in the Fat Salmon 1.25 and 3.4 mile races. The event has gotten more popular each year with this year's field exceeding 300 swimmers. Swimmers could choose between a 1.25 mile or 3.4 mile race, and could compete in either the wetsuit or non-wetsuit divisions. The weather was great and the lake was a balmy 72 degrees, but the lake was overcrowded with boats due to the one day sockeye season open. How appropriate for a Fat Salmon swim! While the boats stayed clear of the race course, their wakes did not. It was very choppy and every five minutes or so you could feel yourself ride on five or six good waves. If you sighted and breathed at the right time, it could be an advantage, but if not, then you would start coughing. Times were quite a bit slower than previous years, but it did not deter many first timers to this event. I found the event very fun to be a participant in, you felt a part of a larger community of swimmers than you get at pool meets, and they were all very enthusiastic at the finish line, cheering in each successive wave of swimmers. Congratulations to all those who took part. Everyone I've talked to plans on coming back next year. Hopefully we can gather some pictures together and stories from our swimmers, in the meantime here are the Federal Way Kings Swimmer results.
