Federal Way Kings at the Northwest LCM Zones 2004 in Port Orchard On a sweltering Saturday, they came from around the Northwest Zones area to compete at Port Orchard. A beautiful little town with an interesting pool. One with a movable floor and submergible bulkhead. We also found out the the whole pool is at least 1" too long, with lane 6 being the longest. The pool had put in a new six lane timing system, which was much better than the one lane clock that would scroll through times. But despite the heat and the pool, the event was host to many fast times, PNA and Zones records, and one world record. The meet was hosted by the Puget Sound Swim Club and featured enthusiastic young age group swimmers as timers, announcers, lap counters and overall cheerleaders. All the kids who were timing we always cheering for the swimmer in their lane, and added a lot of energy to the meet. This was a good thing because the meet on boasted 52 swimmers, from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Arizona. In talking to Steve Peterson, the meet director, he was disappointed in turnout. He is hoping that they can change that around for next year, and that the third time will be the charm (they also hosted the Zones SCM last fall). Saturday's meet which began at Noon was over before 3:00pm, and Sunday was also only three hours long. That didn't leave a lot of recovery time for those of us swimming six events. The highlight of the meet came Sunday, when Scott Lautman was there to once again attempting to claim the 50-54 LCM 200 Fly World Record of 2:22.29 as his own. It was the first event Scott swam Sunday, and since he had joined the 50-54 age group, had often come within tens of a second of beating it. As he started off the blocks it was announced he was going for the record and the whole pool loudly cheered him on. With a split of 1:10.00 at the 100 meter mark, it looked close, but Scott came back in an amazingly strong 1:11.40 to eclipse the record with a 2:21.40, almost a whole second faster. Some of the kids from PSSC came up to Scott to get his autograph, and for what must have been his victory swim, Scott and friends went over to Belfair State Park to swim across Hood Canal and back. Also notable was Doug Parrish, who only competed in his second meet since coming back to Masters. He swam his first ever 200 IM, and 50 Fly which were both swum very strong, and with the six events he swam dropped the most time of the FWM swimmers. Eric Dybdahl had a strong 800 Free and 100 Fly, and Dan Smith swam his first 1500 Free since competing again. Jane Moore also had a nice 1500 Free swim. Congratulations to all the Federal Way Kings who attended. It was a great meet that many of you should consider attending next year. That way you won't miss out on the fun, the competition, the nice lunch we all shared at a Mexican restaurant, and the nice ferry ride home. For a complete list of results, Click Here.
