Enjoying the new brute division at Oak Harbor This year's Pentathlon hosted a new division in it course of events. Normally you can choose between the Sprinter's Choice (4 - 50's each stroke and a 100 IM), the Middle Masters (4 - 100's and a 200 IM) or the Animal (4 - 200's and a a400 IM) divisions. This year they added the Brute division which consisted of what is considered the three toughest events; 1500 free, 200 fly and 400 IM. Dan Smith and John Leet both attended the Pentathlon on a clear cool Autumn day up in Oak Harbor. Dan took on the Brute and John swam the Middle masters. The meets was a little less attended that most, but it had its usual contingent of Canadian swimmers and a solid group from the Naval base in town. Two Zone records and seven PNA records were set at the meet, including Dan Smith who set the PNA record in the 1500 Free. The Brute division actually had one big advantage, REST. When you swim the Animal division, you are basically swimming your 200 fly at 1pm, then a 200 every 20-30 minutes in succession. The Brute division started at 10:00 am, and there was roughly two hours between each swim to recover. That was enough time to drive back to the Deception Pass bridge and walk across it while still getting back in time for the 200 fly. Plus the Jacuzzi next to the pool helps.
