TITLOW LONG COURSE METERS SPRINT MEET RECAP

Complete Results

On a cloudy, not quite summer morning, ten Federal Way Kings joined with fifty other masters swimmers to attend the first annual Long Course Meters Sprint Meet held at Titlow Pool in Tacoma.  This was a rare Long Course meet and it was made rarer by the fact that Titlow is an outdoor pool.  The morning was cool and so was the pool.  It also sported a lot of bird feathers in the corners.  Our own Jane Moore was meet director, and she spent her entire warm-up with a net on a long pole fishing out the feathers for us.

Many that attended this meet had swum in this pool when they were growing up so there was a fair amount of reminiscing.  It was also the site of the 2002 Northwest Zones LCM meet.  Swimmers from Oregon and Canada came, and many were taking advantage of this meet as a warm-up to Masters Worlds held at Stanford in August.  The attendance was fair, given the late notice and it being the first annual meet.  The volunteers that helped with this meet did a great job, many of those swimming the meet also spent time helping at timing, and the meet started at 9:00 and was over by noon.

We all had a good laugh over one typo in the heat sheet, which listed "Moore, Huge" from FWM.  Now there's a "Huge" nickname for Hugh.

Around 10:30 am the sun broke out and began to warm the toes and by the end of the meet it was very pleasant out.  Coach Wendy came and took splits for all of our swims and gave us her excellent advice and encouragement after each swim.  She even helped our NEO friends who have been working out with us.  Even though the pool seemed a bit "slow", there were many very good swims and some personal bests.  I heard many comments from other swimmers about how hard a long course meet really is.  Wendy has been doing such a good job with our long course training, it was really nice to be prepared and put that training to use at this meet.

This was a perfect meet that let you get some good racing in, helped you to see where you were at, was close to our team and didn't take your whole Saturday.  This is a definite "do it again" meet for next year, let's hope the group that put this on will be encouraged to give us all a repeat performance.
